In 1996 at Pacific Beach in San Diego , I
saw my first professional sand sculpture. After meeting Gerry Kirk, President
of W.S.S.A., I was invited to work on his project Atlantis. This was no
ordinary sand castle, this was a Guinness Book of World Record certified
Sand Sculpture. That is were I met the world, Gerry hired teams from Russia
, Japan , Spain , Ireland and of course Holland . Many of the people I
met then are dear friends to this day. Since then I have participated in
several sand events throughout Europe, Asia and North America . I have
been interviewed on CNN twice, and won a few awards along the way. The
prize money can be nice, but meeting new people and seeing new cultures
is the real reward. The chance to travel around the world and create large
pieces of public art has been fantastic. I have seen sand sculpture inspire
and entertain crowds of thousands. More impressively I have seen it communicate,
across borders, and languages. Something magical happens when you take
sand and turn it into a beautiful piece of art. People become intrigued,
they forget everything else and start asking “why” then “how”.
If you have a special event or project that could use the unique medium
of sand sculpture to help gain some attention. Please feel free to contact
Rusty at Frostbite Studios . |
